In the very first scene Audrey Hepburn appears in āthatā black sheath dress created by Hubert de Givenchy. The outfit embodies Parisian chic in the best traditions of the fashion house.
Simple in front, it decorates the back with an intricate cutout. The dress is made of black Italian satin, it doesn't have sleeves, and the skirt with a high cut is pleated at the waist.
The look was completed with gloves up to the elbows, a necklace and tall hair. Riccardo Tisci, creative director at the Givenchy fashion house from 2005 to 2017, said that Hubert de Givenchy's creation became a symbol of the 1960s.
Three copies of the dress were created especially for the shooting of the film. One of them is kept in the archives of the House of Givenchy, the second can be seen at the Museum of costume in Madrid, and the third was sold for 607 thousand euros in 2006 at Christie's auction. The dress broke all records for the cost of props, and all proceeds were donated by the House of Givenchy to the Children's Aid Foundation in Calcutta.
